Optimizing a website primarily involves editing its content and HTML coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. To improve your rankings you can:</p>
<p>1. Add content</p>
<p>Add content, add content, and add content. Before you even register your domain, you should have enough ideas to build 100 pages on your site. Start brainstorming and see what you can come up with in 10 minutes. If that&#8217;s not enough to fill 50 pages, consider not building the site at all. Having lots of content is important.</p>
<p>2. A simple design is better</p>
<p>Text content should outweigh the html content. Stay away from heavy flash, java, JavaScript, etc. Don&#8217;t add to much stuff like &#8216;best viewed with&#8217;&#8230; Your website should be viewable with any browser. Keep it clean and professional.</p>
<p>3. Keep the pages small</p>
<p>Smaller is better. Keep it under 15k if you can. Your site should be fast loading, or people will leave. Speed is everything. Next to content, that is. Keep it under 10k or 5k if you can. Difficult, but people love fast sites. Throw away all the trash on your pages.</p>
<p>4. Content length</p>
<p>Put a new page online every day of about 200 to 500 words. Go to the overture keyword suggester to find ideas of what to write about. Spell checks your content. Search engines can do it, and so should you. If you have a blog, go for article-like posts as opposed to the personal diary kinds of posts.</p>

<p>Use your keywords in the following places: title, description tag, heading, url, once bold, once italic and once high on the page.</p>
<p>6. Link to other sites</p>
<p>Put 2 links to other, high ranking pages on your site. They should be relevant to the content of that page and use keywords as your link. Don&#8217;t add every link that&#8217;s requested. Check their relevance first.</p>
<p>7. Link to your own site</p>
<p>Put links from one page to other relevant pages on your own site. Again: use keywords as your link.</p>
<p>8. Submit your site</p>
<p>Submit your site to Google, AltaVista, Yahoo, Msn, Hotbot, etc. Then forget about that for 6 months. Also submit it to every single directory you can find. Do a check after 6 months and resubmit if you&#8217;re not listed.</p>
<p>9. Log and track</p>
<p>Most hosts provide these. Don&#8217;t use a lame graphic counter. Check where your visitors are coming from to find out what traffic methods work best for your site.</p>
<p>10. Write for people</p>
<p>People are not coming to your site for your content. They are coming for their content. Try to write as if you are writing to one specific person, such as a friend of yours who&#8217;s interested in the same topic. Don&#8217;t try to write for &#8216;all of your visitors&#8217;.</p>
<p>11. Stay ahead</p>
<p>If you know that something big will come out in a few months, build a page about it now. It gives search engines time to index that page so they can feed it to the growing anticipating crowd.</p>
<p>12. Add more content</p>
<p>This is so important: keep adding content. Do this for a year and your site will be a top ranking website within one year. You could&#8217;ve been there now, if you started last year. So start now, so you&#8217;ll be there next year. You&#8217;ll thank yourself (and me) later.</p>

So this technique does indeed work, but these days it really takes at least 10 articles, and usually closer to 50 articles, to be really successful. This can take a great deal of time and effort.</p>
<p><strong>Commenting on Forums</strong> Whatever the niche of your website, you can usually find forums where you can participate in a discussion. Every time you post, you can include a link back to your website in your signature. Forum links can be useful as backlinks, but again these take time to accumulate.</p>
<p><strong>Commenting on Blogs</strong> Just like for forums, you can usually find blogs where you can leave comments. Unfortunately, many blog owners will only accept some comments, and usually the blog links will have the &#8220;no-follow&#8221; attribute, making them useless for SEO value on Google.</p>
<p><strong>Link Exchanges</strong> Many people try link exchange techniques in order to get links from related websites. This technique used to work reasonably well, but the search engines now discount reciprocal links. Getting one way links is much more valuable, but is also much harder to do. Most website owners now know that reciprocal links are not very valuable, so most of the time your attempts to email webmasters with link exchange offers will be a waste of time.</p>
<p><strong>Purchase Links</strong> You can also try to buy links from link brokers. This can work if the search engines don&#8217;t catch you, but the search engines do not want people to purchase links and Google actively encourages people to report purchased links. Even when this technique works, it can get very expensive to buy individual links.</p>
<p><strong>Yes, There IS A better Way!</strong> The above list gives you a good idea of the standard approaches to getting backlinks. The problem is that each of these approaches is either horribly time consuming (and boring) or horribly expensive.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="color: #000000;">For the past few weeks I&#8217;ve been tasked with reviewing a few different sites that have seen a loss in traffic – their owners hoped to find out why. I love these kinds of reviews because it&#8217;s like solving a mystery or figuring out a puzzle. While it&#8217;s not always possible to determine the exact cause for the traffic loss, I can usually make some educated guesses based on what I dig up in Google Analytics.</span></p>
<p><a href="http://208.110.82.115/~markin/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/LostLogo_.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-30" title="LostLogo_" src="http://208.110.82.115/~markin/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/LostLogo_-300x169.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="169" /></a></p>
<p><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Here are 9 steps you can take to diagnose the cause of lost search engine traffic:</span></strong></p>
<ol>
<li><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Determine what type of traffic loss you&#8217;re dealing with.</span></strong><span style="color: #000000;"> Many people look at Google&#8217;s overview page, see a loss of overall traffic to their website, and assume that they must have lost their rankings in Google and the targeted traffic that comes with it. This may or may not be the case. Be sure to check for search engine traffic, and even more specifically Google non-paid traffic.</span></li>
<li><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Look at the extent of the traffic loss.</span></strong><span style="color: #000000;"> Your research will be very different depending on whether there was a gradual decline in traffic or a sudden, drastic drop. I reviewed a site last week that lost all of their Google unpaid traffic overnight! This sort of loss is typically a technical issue such as a robots.txt file or a nofollow directive that keeps search engine spiders from indexing your pages. Sometimes it&#8217;s not actually a loss of traffic at all – your analytics code could have been inadvertently removed from all or most of the pages, making it appear like a traffic loss. I have seen all of the above more times than I can count in just the last couple of months!</span></li>
<li><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Compare apples to apples.</span></strong><span style="color: #000000;"> Many businesses are cyclical or seasonal. A gift site may see huge spikes in traffic the months leading up to Christmas or the weeks before other holidays. This means that comparing any month to the previous month may not tell you the whole story. A drop in traffic in January is probably fairly normal for a gift site. If you&#8217;ve got more than a year&#8217;s worth of data, you&#8217;ll want to compare this month&#8217;s traffic to the same month in previous years. Ideally, you&#8217;d of course want to see a growth in traffic. And if you don&#8217;t, then you may very well have a problem on your hands. If you don&#8217;t have data that goes back that far, you can compare month to month, but be sure to take the data with a grain of salt.</span></li>
<li><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Review and filter out &#8220;brand&#8221; traffic.</span></strong><span style="color: #000000;"> Most websites get a lot of Google traffic from people who&#8217;ve typed some version of the name of their company as their search query. You&#8217;ll want to note whether those visitors have significantly increased or decreased. If you receive fewer visitors for your brand, this could be caused by a decrease in marketing and advertising. Once you make note of the brand traffic, you&#8217;ll want to filter it out so you can study actual keyword traffic, which is what real SEO traffic consists of.</span></li>
<li><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Analyze which keyword phrases have had a significant decrease in visitors.</span></strong><span style="color: #000000;"> Now that you&#8217;ve filtered out the brand traffic, you should be able to see the keyword phrases that are bringing you the most traffic. If you have lots, you may want to view 100 phrases at a time rather than the default of just 10. Are there lots of keyword phrases that seem to bring far fewer visitors over the last few months as compared to last year at the same time? You may also notice some that are bringing significantly more visitors.</span></li>
<li><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Do a quick Google search for the phrases.</span></strong><span style="color: #000000;"> If you&#8217;re not seeing any pages from your site on the first page in Google, it may or may not be a clue (given the fact that </span><strong><span style="color: #000000;">everyone sees different search results</span></strong><span style="color: #000000;">) but it is definitely a cause to investigate further. If a page from your site does show up fairly high in the list, it could just be that fewer people are searching for that phrase now as compared to before. Or it could be that your listing isn&#8217;t quite what the searcher is looking for based on your title and descriptive snippet. There might also be other results for the keyword phrase that have images or video embedded whereas yours doesn&#8217;t. Or there might be local map results showing up that make your result less appealing.</span></li>
<li><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Review the landing page for the keyword phrase that lost traffic.</span></strong><span style="color: #000000;"> Is there any obvious reason why it&#8217;s not bringing in as many visitors as it used to? Does it even exist anymore? Did it change substantially at some point during the year? Did it get buried deeper into the site architecture for some reason? Is the content duplicated from other pages within your site or contained on other websites? Were there links pointing to it at some point that no longer are? Does the copy read naturally, or are there a few extra instances of the keyword phrase than really makes sense to a person?</span></li>
<li><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Review your long-tail traffic.</span></strong><span style="color: #000000;"> Since the end of April and early May 2010 a few large sites lost a substantial amount of traffic for keyword phrases that brought small numbers of visitors individually, but in aggregate they made up a lot of website traffic. You&#8217;ll want to filter your keywords to those that have only a few visitors (even just 1) and see if there are significantly fewer of those than previously. If this is the case, Google has gone on record stating that they&#8217;re doing a better job at sending long-tail traffic to more meaningful and relevant pages than they used to. Which means you&#8217;ll have to go above and beyond what you&#8217;re currently doing if you want to get that long-tail traffic back.</span></li>
<li><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Decide if you&#8217;re dealing with a search engine penalty.</span></strong><span style="color: #000000;"> For drastic drops, in the rare cases where it&#8217;s not a technical issue, you&#8217;re most likely dealing with a penalty. You can check your Google Webmaster Tools account to see if there is a notification of a penalty, but they don&#8217;t usually bother to tell you. Still, search engine penalties are much rarer than people think. In fact, most website owners know what they&#8217;ve done wrong when they have a search engine penalty. There are some cases, however, where they may have been duped by a less than scrupulous &#8220;SEO&#8221; company. The penalties I&#8217;ve seen seem to occur on sites that have no redeeming value because they have the same products and content that can be found on many other sites (often ones owned by the same company), plus they are deeply entrenched in massive link farms. It&#8217;s likely that they are also hosting part of the link farm on their own site in the form of a link directory. If this is what you find, you may be better off to start from scratch rather than trying to salvage the penalized domain.</span></li>

<p>One of my favorite pastimes is debunking SEO myths – and there are many! I could probably come up with 100 SEO-related ideas or actions that people think are helpful, but which in reality won&#8217;t provide them with more targeted traffic to their websites.</p>
<p>Here are some of the more prevalent myths I hear and see bandied about in SEO articles, at SEO conferences, in SEO blogs and on SEO forums:</p>
<p><strong>SEO Myth #1: You need special search engine pages.</strong></p>
<p>While it&#8217;s not as prevalent as it used to be, we still get calls from companies who want us to create some sort of &#8220;<strong>SEO landing pages</strong>.&#8221; While landing pages often make sense for paid search campaigns such as Google AdWords, they&#8217;re unnecessary for organic SEO campaigns. Well, I shouldn&#8217;t say that they&#8217;re unnecessary – it&#8217;s just that your SEO landing pages shouldn&#8217;t be something outside of your site. They should already exist as an integral part of it. If those aren&#8217;t currently bringing you search engine traffic, it doesn&#8217;t mean you need to add new pages, it means you have to optimize your existing ones better.</p>
<p><strong>SEO Myth #2: You need to optimize for just one keyword phrase per page.</strong></p>
<p>Many, many SEOs and businesses believe that you should optimize each page of your site for just one keyword phrase. Their thinking is that you will keep a strong focus on that one keyword phrase. The problem with this is, first, it&#8217;s very difficult if not impossible to <strong>write a page in a natural manner</strong> while you&#8217;re trying to focus on just one keyword phrase. And second, it&#8217;s a waste of a good page!</p>
<p>Why optimize for just one keyword phrase when you can optimize it for 3 or even 5 keyword phrases? The more keyword phrases you optimize a page for (within reason), the more targeted search engine traffic you will receive. If you look at your web analytics right now, you&#8217;ll typically see that each page of your site is already bringing in traffic from various forms of numerous keyword phrases. It&#8217;s not only okay to optimize for more than one phrase, but in my opinion it&#8217;s critical to your website and to search engine success.</p>
<p><strong>SEO Myth #3: You can&#8217;t use tables in your HTML code.</strong></p>
<p>This one makes me want to scream. HTML tables have been easily spiderable by search engines since the search engines were newly hatched. As far as I know, <strong>table code has never been anything that choked the search engines</strong>. I think this myth was propagated by website developers who advocate tableless designs to make you think you&#8217;ll somehow get better rankings out of their designs. You won&#8217;t.</p>
<p><strong>SEO Myth #4: You must use text links, not image links.</strong></p>
<p>Nope. Like tables, the <strong>search engines have been able to follow and index image links</strong> since their very early days. You certainly don&#8217;t have to ruin a beautiful website design that uses images for the primary navigation because you think it&#8217;s better for SEO. Just be sure to use the same words you&#8217;d use in your anchor text links in your image alt attribute text (alt tags), and you&#8217;ll be good to go for the search engines.</p>
<p><strong>SEO Myth #5: You can&#8217;t use Flash on your website.</strong></p>
<p>Yes, you can! While I don&#8217;t recommend that you create your entire website in Flash, using bits of Flash here and there for some cool effects will not bother or choke the search engines in the least. They don&#8217;t punish, penalize or otherwise nuke into oblivion sites that have Flash on them. You should of course avoid putting important content into your Flash elements, and also remember that some mobile devices such as the iPhone and iPad don&#8217;t support Flash. But if you add alternative text for non-Flash-enabled browsers, all should be well.</p>
<p><strong>SEO Myth #6: Google&#8217;s link: operator tells you all the links that Google knows about.</strong></p>
<p>No, no, and double no! Typing link:www.yoursite.com into Google&#8217;s search box often won&#8217;t even show you any links, let alone all of your links. And when it does show you some, they&#8217;re usually not the best ones. Don&#8217;t even bother to use this command because it is useless at best. While there are some helpful tools that can find some backward links, there is no foolproof method for finding out about all the links that point to your site or to your competitors&#8217; sites. The good news is, just because you can&#8217;t find them all doesn&#8217;t mean they don&#8217;t exist. Keep making a great site and getting the word out about it, and you&#8217;ll keep building up your link profile, whether or not you can generate an accurate list of them.</p>
<p><strong>SEO Myth #7: Toolbar PageRank = Real PageRank.</strong></p>
<p>Most people who&#8217;ve learned a bit about SEO have seen Google&#8217;s PageRank toolbar graph at one point or another. It supposedly shows the importance in Google&#8217;s eyes of any given URL. Unfortunately, <strong>it&#8217;s not even close to an accurate representation of any page&#8217;s importance to Google</strong>.</p>
<p>That said, don&#8217;t let that fact lull you into thinking that PageRank – that is, the real PageRank that Google, Inc. knows about your website – is not important. It&#8217;s extremely important in how your site will perform in the search results for your targeted keyword phrases; there&#8217;s just no way for you to truly know exactly what it is.</p>
<p><strong>SEO Myth #8: Google or other organizations can certify SEO companies or declare them the Best/Top SEO in the world.</strong></p>
<p>Despite what some SEO companies would like you to believe, there is <strong>no such thing as an SEO certification</strong>. No organization currently exists that can certify that any company is qualified to perform search engine optimization services. There are no definitive tests that an SEO company can take to prove that they are qualified, and there are no courses that, when passed, will prove that a company can do SEO. Yes, there are courses people can take that will provide them with a certificate of completion for that course, but don&#8217;t ever believe that a certificate of that sort has any real meaning beyond the completion of the course.</p>
<p>There are also lists and directories of SEO companies who pay a fee for the honor of being labeled the &#8220;#1 SEO company!&#8221; If you are ever in the market for SEO services, don&#8217;t let those <strong>fake paid-for awards</strong> trick you into thinking that the SEO company must be good or the best. While it&#8217;s possible they may be a perfectly fine company, they may not be. Paying for a &#8220;best&#8221; label doesn&#8217;t magically make a company any good. It just means they are willing to spend the money it takes to purchase the label. Much to the surprise of unwitting SEO clients, award sites are not actual rating or ranking SEO companies based on any skill sets.</p>

<p>Yes, real PageRank (PR), that kind that only Google knows, about plays a very large part in websites showing up (or not) for search queries that are relevant to it. But toolbar PageRank is another matter entirely. What you see there doesn&#8217;t correlate very well to where your page will show up in the search results.</p>

<p>Not so much in and of itself. Real PR, as mentioned above, is calculated not only on the number of links, but also on the quality of those links. A handful of links from authoritative, trustworthy, relevant pages should far outweigh hundreds of links from so-so sites.</p>

<p>Not in that there&#8217;s some special percentage that you need to aim for. Certainly it&#8217;s helpful to have the keyword phrases that you&#8217;d like to show up being used within the content of your page. But that&#8217;s just common sense, if you ask me&#8211;not any specific Google rule. Surely, if your page is about a certain something (your keyword phrase), how could that phrase NOT be on the page?</p>

<p>This is important only because if it takes too long to load, it might not be properly (or completely) indexed.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s doubtful that this matters, because there&#8217;s no way for Google to know the bounce rate of every site. And it wouldn&#8217;t be fair for them to only count the bounce rates of those sites that have Google Analytics installed, so my guess is that this is not a factor, not any specific Google rule.</p>

<p>Like the above answer, they don&#8217;t know this number unless the site has Google Analytics installed. That said, they may sometimes incorporate the old trick of seeing if a searcher clicks to another site in the search results after clicking one result, and how long it took them to click another. In other words, if they find that lots of people who clicked to one site in the search engine results pages (SERPs) always end up back at Google to try another site, then perhaps that first site wasn&#8217;t a great answer to the search query after all.</p>

</ul>
<p>From what I can tell, this can often be a factor. But it doesn&#8217;t seem to be as prominent a factor as it was a few years ago.</p>
<p><strong>3.      Is there any special technique for content writing?</strong></p>
<p>There&#8217;s no special technique, but I highly suggest hiring a professional marketing copywriter. You will see a positive return on your investment very quickly if you do. In addition, the tried and true SEO copyediting techniques in my &#8220;<strong>Nitty-gritty of Writing for Search Engines</strong>&#8221; may come in handy if you&#8217;re not sure how to integrate your keyword phrases into your professionally written content.</p>
<p><strong>4.      Should we cater to code-to-text ratio while developing websites?</strong></p>
<p>There&#8217;s not one shred of evidence that this would have an effect on where a page would show up in the search results for a relevant search query. Therefore I doubt that there any any Google rules around it.</p>
<p><strong>5.      If active scripting is a must for webpage development, how harmful can it be for PageRank and positions?</strong></p>
<p>It&#8217;s typically not harmful at all because it&#8217;s usually done before a browser (or search engine spider) sees a page. To users and search engines, your dynamically generated pages are just static HTML by the time they get to them. Still, not all dynamically generated pages are created equal. There are some ways of developing your site that are less search friendly than others. For example, some JavaScript menus, some AJAX, etc.</p>

<p><strong>6.      If a webpage is ranking top for a specific keyword, if we make textual changes in that webpage, is there any chance that we lose the rankings?</strong></p>
<p>Any changes you make to a page&#8217;s content can affect how relevant the search engines believe it to be for any particular search query. That doesn&#8217;t mean it definitely will change the search results, but it could. The only way to know is to try it and see. Usually, if you&#8217;re rewriting your page to be more useful to your site visitors and you don&#8217;t remove all the instances of the keyword phrase, you should be fine. Because nothing is permanent with SEO, if you don&#8217;t like what you see you can tweak it until you do.</p>
<p><strong>7.      Is it possible to be #1 for 20 high-volume searched keywords on Google for a particular domain?</strong></p>
<p>Of course. Every website has lots of pages contained within it, each of which has the ability to be relevant for a number of keyword phrases. However, it&#8217;s important to note that what you see as the #1 result may not be what everyone else sees. A better question to ask would be, &#8220;Is it possible to get search engine traffic for 20 high-volume searched keywords?&#8221;</p>

<strong>8.      How many good-quality links does a webpage require to be in #1 position at Google?</strong></p>

<p><strong>9.      Is link building an ongoing process forever in order to maintain the top positions?</strong></p>
<p>Like most of the answers I&#8217;ve been providing, it depends. An awesome website that is different from its competitors and that is continually developing innovative content will consistently generate high-quality links. But the site that is the same as its competitors with no real added value will most likely end up having to beg for links for its entire existence.</p>
<p><strong>10.    Is there any other significant factor for SEO apart from those mentioned above?</strong></p>
<p>Yes, there are thousands of other factors! I&#8217;d suggest reading all the articles referenced here, as well as past issues of this newsletter. Also, become a regular member of the High Rankings SEO Forum. Keep studying, but more than that, keep trying different things on your own sites – learn what works and what doesn&#8217;t that way.</p>

<p><strong>The algorithm</strong> (or algo) is basically the ranking formula that each search engine uses to determine the relevancy of any page that the crawler finds.</p>
<p>The search engines use this formula to decide – out of the pages that were previously fetched – which pages they should show for which keyword phrases that any searcher might type into the search box. Those keyword phrases are also sometimes referred to as a person&#8217;s &#8220;search query.&#8221;</p>
<p>While the algo is a formula, it&#8217;s so complicated that it&#8217;s not something you can simply reverse-engineer. The engines look at hundreds of factors and weigh them all differently. This is why you&#8217;ll find that automated SEO software doesn&#8217;t work well to increase your rankings.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s an interesting point – those hundreds of factors that go into the relevancy algorithm boil down to two major things:</p>
<p><strong>What you say about yourself, and what others say about you.</strong></p>
<p>Really. It&#8217;s as simple (and as hard) as that!</p>
<p><strong>&#8220;What you say about yourself&#8221;</strong> means the information you provide on your website, or the words that you write on your pages. The Internet is mostly a word-based medium. Every single web page has its own story to tell. Each page should be relevant to one or more search keywords or phrases. And each page&#8217;s story helps the search engines understand which search queries the page is relevant to.</p>

<p>So now let&#8217;s look at <strong>what others say about you</strong>. This aspect of how the search engines determine relevancy is known as the &#8220;off-page&#8221; criteria, and it&#8217;s typically done through links.</p>
<p>That is, another site owner likes what you say or offer on your site, and wants to tell their own site visitors about it. The way they do this is by linking to your site – or a specific page of your site. Search engines take these links into account because what others say about you provides an additional layer of trust beyond what you say about yourself.</p>

<p>These two major factors – how search engines work and what they&#8217;re looking for – help clarify what you need to do SEO-wise to keep them happy.</p>
<p>First, you need to <strong>steer clear of any technical issues</strong> that can impede the crawler from finding, reading and indexing the pages of your website. The easier you make it for them to do their job, the better chance your pages will have of showing up for relevant searches.</p>
<p>Which means you need to <strong>start on the SEO of your website from the very beginning</strong>. You&#8217;re going to need lots of up-front research on keywords and other elements. You&#8217;ll also need to make sure your content is written to appeal to both your users and to the search engines. While all of this *can* be done later, you&#8217;ll save yourself tons of time if you plan your SEO before you ever start developing your website.</p>
<p>Then, once you&#8217;ve got a crawler-friendly website, you&#8217;ll need to <strong>create pages that conform to the search engines&#8217; algorithms</strong> by making sure they are not only relevant to what people are looking for, but interesting and unique enough for others to want to link to them. You&#8217;ve also got to spend time getting the word out about your website, because even the greatest content in the world won&#8217;t market itself!</p>
<p>I hope I&#8217;ve simplified the search engine process and SEO enough that you understand why you need to use the specific tactics that are involved. If you always keep the two major factors that search engines are looking for in mind – what you say about yourself and what others say about you – you&#8217;ll always be able to make the right decisions for your website.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s those two factors that drive the SEO process and fulfill its goal of helping your target audience find your website when they&#8217;re seeking out exactly what you offer.</p>
